Bullying is the top factor that prevents kids from enjoying a happy school life and a future, as it is evident from the astounding stats released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Department of Education. These disturbing data show that 49% of all school-going children are subjected to bullying, and 12% are subjected to the more damaging variant, cyberbullying. This shows that despite the combined efforts of law, adult-intervention and awareness among children, parents and educators, we have not yet succeeded in erasing bullying from our schools. It is time to think of alternatives.

It is Time to Act: How Bullying can Damage your Child

We cannot wait anymore for law and intervention to prevent bullying, because the damage it can do (or has already done) to our children are often irreversible. Unlike popular beliefs, bullying leaves a negative impact in not just the bullied, but also the bully. It harms anyone who is involved in it. Children who suffered bullying from childhood may develop personality issues like social anxiety, quiet moods, insecurity or deeper psychological consequences like depression and suicidal tendency. Bullies, on the other hand, already may be plagued by insecurities and frustrations in life, and engaging in bullying only worsens these. A past bully may fall to antisocial behavior, substance abuse or psychological issues. Being a bully can forever ruin them, interfering with their career, relationships and all aspects of life. In short, both the victim and the bully need help and bullying need to be prevented at all costs.

A Martial Arts Solution for Bullying
As long as bullying continues to throw up alarming numbers and stats, it indicates a failure of the system to prevent it. The only way out here is to equip our kids with something or other that will help them to defend themselves if they are a potential victim or restrain from bullying if they are a potential bully. The following are some of the ways in which martial arts can be a perfect solution for bullying in this way.

In the case of victims,

  • Martial arts act as a good and powerful self defense
  • It helps them to stand up to the bully for themselves and others
  • It teaches them confidence and courage and gives them physical strength
  • It gives them the emotional courage to get over past bullying

In the case of bullies,

  • Martial art gives a positive vent to their excess energy and pent up emotions
  • It makes them compassionate and sociable
  • It makes them self-disciplined and controlled
  • It helps them to get over their dominating and overpowering nature

Teaching martial arts to your children can be a good and sure way to ensure that he/she is not part of bullying, either as a victim or as a bully.

Behind every legendary success, there is a life dedicated to hard work, passion and dreams. When it comes to martial arts in Massachusetts, Bruce McCorry’s Martial Arts Academy (Peabody) is a legendary success to think of. Having begun as a small martial art venture in 1978, it succeeded in running successfully for the past four decades and accomplished the goal of becoming the number one martial art school in the area. The life behind this legendary success is none other than Bruce McCorry, a noted name in modern martial arts.

Master Bruce McCorry: A Life Meant for Martial Arts
Born in Revere in Massachusetts, Bruce McCorry’s life was an ordinary one until that day in 1967 when he was deeply struck by Bruce Lee in the Green Hornet TV Series as a 13-year-old. It was a turning point in his life, showing him the right path which would lead him to his career and passion later in life.

His martial art journey had its inception when he joined the Mattson Karate Academy to learn Uechi Ru, the first of the many arts that he would soon master. Within five years, Master McCorry, who found his passion in martial art moved on to new vistas, choosing to learn Kung Fu from P. Chan, the Grandmaster and Taekwondo from Peter Chung Taekwondo Academy. By 1977, Master Bruce McCorry knew that martial art was his calling in life.

A Dream Come True: Bruce McCorry’s Academy and the Success Journey that Followed
Once Master McCorry knew that martial arts was all that he wanted to do in life, his dreams began to take a concrete shape. He wished to impart the arts he learned to as many newcomers as he can, and this led to the establishment of Bruce McCorry’s Academy in 1978, when he was barely 24 years old.

Being the young owner of a new martial art school didn’t tie him down. Always driven by the passion to learn more, he earned the qualification to be an instructor in both Kung Fu and Tai Chi by 1983 and toured all over Asia, the cradle of ancient martial arts. This journey marked another turning point in his life, as he won the acclaim of being part of the first Kung Fu troup from America to perform in Shaolin Temple, the hub of modern Kung Fu.

Forty Years of Success: The Present of Bruce McCorry’s Academy
Master McCorry had the most productive years of his life to follow: he trained in Taekwondo under none other than the Grandmaster, Jhoon Ree, and won many acclaims including the title of 7th Dan in KukkiWon, entry to the Martial Art Hall of Fame in 2002 and the honor of being Master Instructor one year later.

All these years, the academy had steadily grown in efficiency and in number of students enrolled each year. Today it has inclusive programs in diverse martial arts aimed for preschoolers, school-going children, adults, seniors and people with special needs. It has opened special wings for major martial arts; has participated in unique programs like fundraisers and awareness schemes and has introduced innovations of modern research like energy healing. Today, Bruce McCorry’s Academy, which stays true to both the past and future of martial arts, is the sought after destination for martial art lovers.

Doctors and experts in the medical field have been working on neuromuscular conditions for quite a long while. Even though neuromuscular diseases demand the same kind of attention and care from the part of patients and doctors as other chronic and serious conditions, the truth is that many people do not know what they really are. To bust the myths surrounding neuromuscular conditions and to explore possible solutions, it is important to understand them in detail.

Neuromuscular Diseases: What You Must Know
A human body has voluntary muscles which are the ones we can move at our will, and they are controlled by the neurological system. When the neurons or the nerve cells which mediate between the brain and these muscles get weakened, it can lead to serious conditions which hamper the free movement of muscles and lead to symptoms like aches, cramps, and involuntary muscle movement. Broadly, these are classified as neuromuscular conditions. Some of the major neuromuscular diseases are:

  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: ALS is a common neuromuscular disease that strikes people between 40 and 60 years of age, which causes gradual muscular failure leading to severe respiratory problems.
  • Polymyostis: This condition targets the immune system, leading to the destruction of body tissues and the gradual increase in pain and fatigue.
  • Myasthenia Gravis: It affects the voluntary muscle movements, and is caused by imbalances in immunity system that leads to muscle weakening.
  • Multiple Sclerosis: Caused by the destruction of sheaths that protect the neurons, this condition affects spinal cord and brain, leading to disturbances in vision, muscle movement, balance and coordination, memory and loss of sensation
  • Spinal Muscular Atrophy: This condition targets the motor neurons in spinal cord, which affects muscular movements in general.

Is there a Cure for Neuromuscular Diseases? - Martial Arts for Help and Support
The first thing that the doctors tell those diagnosed with neuromuscular conditions is that it is mostly caused by genetic traits and are incurable. Technically, this is true as a total cure is yet to be discovered. However, many recent studies and testimonies tell us how martial arts can significantly improve the life of people with neuromuscular diseases.

Martial arts are shown to help patients with a number of symptoms that are related to neuromuscular conditions, such as:

  • Difficulties with muscular movement
  • Lack of coordination and balance
  • Loss of sensation and memory
  • Fatigue, pain and aching

Martial arts programs have been found immensely successful with patients suffering from neuromuscular conditions. The story of Sandra LaRosa, a martial art teacher from Bruce McCorry’s Academy (Peabody, MA) is nothing short of miraculously inspirational. Diagnosed with polymyostis in her youth, her regular practice of martial arts at Bruce McCorry’s Academy, along with proper clinical treatment, helped her to significantly improve her situation. The goal-oriented martial arts at Bruce McCorry’s helped her to reduce the impact of the symptoms and made it possible for her to live with her condition without putting aside her life’s goals and dreams.   For more on Sandra's story, please visit:

Perhaps your health and wellness did not bother you that much in your 20s. But once you move higher up in age, your body starts telling you it is time to pay attention to health and wellness. For hundreds of years, men and women have sought ways to conquer their years and stay rejuvenated and young even after their thirties. They have asked whether there is a cure that could actually perform the age miracle that they want so badly. Modern research tells us that if anything can be this cure, that is martial arts.

Martial Arts for Adults: Look and Feel Young, Fit and Healthy
Thousands of years ago, warrior clans in Asia discovered that practicing martial arts is a sure way to keep themselves healthy and fit for battles even after their youth is gone. The 21st century adult may not have to

  • It can help them to remain healthy by curbing lifestyle diseases, by checking the tendency to put on unhealthy weight and by rejuvenating metabolism and blood circulation.
  • It can keep them fit like no workout can. Martial arts can burn the fat easily and effectively, helping you to remain as supple and fit in your adulthood as in your 20s
  • Martial arts can help adults to feel young. It can make them think positively, reduce stress, help them to be mentally free and cultivate a positive attitude to life.

Martial Arts for Seniors: The Path to Defense, Dignity and Happiness
Through years, many discussions happened on how to improve the quality of life for seniors. What debates and policies can barely accomplish, martial arts proved that it can. Martial arts can do much for seniors:

  • It teaches them to defend themselves. This was the only proper solution for the physical vulnerability and consequent fears that plague the senior life. Martial arts give seniors the confidence and physical strength to keep themselves safe
  • A major factor that prevents seniors from enjoying life is that as long as they are not occupied in anything, they don’t feel like leading a dignified life. Something like martial arts which seniors can enjoy, where they can socialize and bond, is what they need to feel dignified in their life.
  • Happiness, in senior life, comes from health, contentment of being occupied, comfort and safety. Martial arts can provide them with all these. It keeps them free of stress and helps them to be positive in life.
