This is a significant moment for the anti-abuse movements across the nation, as this October marks three decades since the month has been declared Domestic Violence Awareness Month. However, the campaigns that have been going on since 1980s haven't helped in erasing the issue, as the contemporary stats prove. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV),
  • Even today, 20 people in US get physically abused by intimate partners every minute
  • Every day marks 20,000 incidents of domestic violence reported over phone to anti-abuse hotlines
  • 15% of all violent crime in the nation is done by intimate partners

This indicates the need to make people aware of the perils of domestic violence without delay. Even more, it indicates the need to equip people to recognize and resist instances of domestic violence, as and when it is happening to them. Martial arts can play a great role in this.

Knowing Domestic Violence and its Consequences
Domestic violence is a broad term that denotes a wide range of abuse and victimization that happens in the private sphere, often between intimate partners. Though everyone might casually know what it is, it is difficult to recognize it when it happens to you or to someone close. That is why these facts matter:
  • Domestic violence can take lethal forms like homicide and rape. However, it may also take other forms - of physical abuse, mental abuse, sexual violence, verbal violence, stalking and harassing to name a few. Even seemingly trivial ones like threat can have lethal consequences for the victim.
  • Though intimate partners are the usual culprits, violence from any family member can be counted and reported as domestic violence.
  • Women and children are statistically more victimized. However, as NCADV reports, men too are victimized in domestic circumstances and can be subject to domestic violence.
It is crucial to know the ways in which violence happens, because it can have drastic aftereffects for the victims and perpetuators. Its consequences range from suicide and depression to stress, trauma, anxiety, neurological disorders, addiction and economic consequences. Impact of domestic violence may last generations as dysfunctional domestic situation pass on negative emotions to kids.

Resisting Domestic Violence through Martial Arts
Fighting domestic violence can be a lot easier with martial arts at your side. Most often, help reaches too late to the victims of domestic violence. Martial arts can prepare the learners to recognize and resist domestic violence before it is too late. With this in mind, many notable martial art schools like Bruce McCorry's Academy focus on martial art lessons that build physical, mental and emotional strength.
  • Martial arts helps learners to be alert to potentially abusive behavior within the domestic sphere.
  • It makes the learners physically capable of resisting abuse. Kids, women, men and seniors can benefit from possessing a self-defense like martial arts.
  • It can teach confidence, self-esteem, courage and dignity. These values come crucial in knowing and resisting domestic violence.
  • As it is a powerful stress-buster, martial arts can help cope up with the mental consequences of domestic violence in past and present.
  • Emotional stability is a great factor of staying strong and resisting. Martial arts teach this.
  • Martial arts can also help the perpetuators of domestic violence, as it will teach them to deal with their own emotional and mental insecurities and treat others with respect.

This October is to teach ourselves to recognize and resist domestic violence whether it happens to us or to those around us . Say no to violence and say yes to life.
