It is often argued that in individualistic societies, self-esteem is often the only cultural capital that people can hope to bank on. Over the years, ours has grown into a society where success happens only to those who are good at being comfortable in their own skin and can give off the aura of believing in oneself. Even though we do not choose to define success in the narrow terms of education, career and money, we can still see that lack of self-esteem will take us nowhere. Therefore, it is extremely important to learn to value and esteem ourselves. This is where learning martial arts can make a crucial change to our lives.

Self-Esteem and the Five Steps to Better Living
It is easier to grow up without self-esteem than with it. Through our younger days, there would be many factors that will trample our self-esteem and tell us we are not worthy: poor circumstances, class, race and gender, dysfunctional families, unforgiving educational atmosphere, bullying peers – there is no need to even name these. Few will tell us that we do matter, and that we need to believe in ourselves. However, self-esteem is a stepping stone to better living, at least in five key ways:

  1. In a competitive society like ours, where confidence is academically preferred and where the timid ones are often bullied, it is impossible to climb the academic ladder without self-esteem.
  2. The same stands for career. When more and more of professional success depends on charisma, presentation skills and motivation, self-esteem is what will help us to persevere.
  3. Self-esteem is the key to building a healthy relationship and family. Those without self-esteem often end up in abusive or exhausting relationships which they endure all their lives.
  4. Self-esteem is what builds our social life as well. It is impossible to create a healthy and helpful social circle without believing in oneself.
  5. Our personal self-actualization also hinges on self-esteem. Self-esteem helps us to know ourselves and value ourselves, which is extremely important for emotional and mental balance.

Building Self-Esteem through Martial Arts
Martial arts experts at Bruce McCorry’s Academy (Peabody, MA) have explored the impact of martial art on self-esteem and have come up with intriguing results. In their everyday classrooms, they witnessed martial arts helping to build self-esteem in the following ways:

  •  It makes learners aware of the intrinsic value of human life – both one’s own and those of others. This helps them to believe in themselves and respect others.
  • It helps the learners to discover the confident and courageous self that remains dormant in them.
  • It helps the learners – especially kids and teenagers – to identify and pursue the field in which their strength and talent lies. This becomes a source of self-esteem for many.
  • It boosts the self-esteem and confidence of learners through teaching them self-defense.

There is clear signs that martial arts inculcate self-esteem: it is proven scientifically that martial art learners find it easier to stand up to bullying, cyber-bullying and peer-pressure. They resist assault attempts and domestic violence and learn to defend themselves physically and mentally. They learn to voice their needs and desires, be assertive and refuse to be pushed over.

Martial arts is your once-in-a-lifetime chance to awaken the real you through learning to value yourself. Don’t lose the chance!
