A better, successful and happier life is the dream that we all tried hard to realize from the moment we learnt to dream. To open a door, we need the right key – but is there a magic key that can unlock happiness and success in our lives? In 1937, an American psychologist argued that we can find that key in our own minds – that thought developed into the notion of Positive Mental Attitude or simply PMA.

Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) – Understanding the Concept
In 1937, American psychologist and self-help author, Napoleon Hill, came up with the concept of Positive Mental Attitude or PMA and suggested that PMA holds the key to unlock the many unrealized potentials within us. His formulation, which falls within the branch of positive psychology, suggests that keeping up a positive and optimistic attitude in everyday situations and actions can actually attract positive changes, happiness and success. Keeping optimism and hope as the keywords to his argument, Hill maintained that developing PMA can bring about life-altering transformations to us dispelling negativity and pain.

Martial Arts and the Art of Cultivating Positive Mental Attitude
The idea of creating a Positive Mental Attitude and keeping an unwavering optimistic disposition are better said than done. Everyday life is not always a bed of roses, and keeping your mind hooked to positive thoughts through everyday worries and strife is not an easy job. This is exactly why you can seek the help of martial arts to cultivate and maintain PMA.

My own experience of leading a martial art school (Bruce McCorry’s Academy, Peabody, MA) for the past four decades suggested to me the miraculous ways in which martial arts can be used to instill a positive mental attitude in young and adult learners. Whichever martial art you choose to learn and practice, generally they share the following traits which are crucial for the development of PMA:

  • Martial arts act as the perfect stress-relieving mechanism. Many martial arts include positive thought techniques and meditative tactics that dispel worry. Further, the rhythmic physical movements help in reducing stress. This makes the ground for cultivating PMA.
  • Martial arts can instill confidence and self-esteem. Half of the negativity in our lives stems from situations where we feel incapable or inadequate. With these managed, it becomes easy for you to sustain positive thoughts.
  • Martial arts help to maintain a good health quotient. Regular martial arts practice boosts metabolism and helps in the release of hormones of relaxation and contentment like dopamine. This can help in sustaining PMA.
  • Martial arts are endowed with the capability to take away your concerns and to help you realize your dreams. If you are worried about your body, martial arts can help you to keep fit. If you are stressed about your academic or professional performance, martial arts can help you to boost it by training you in skills and values that are relevant for success.

As years of martial arts teaching experience at Bruce McCorry’s Academy have proved time and again, martial arts can do for you all the groundwork necessary to create a Positive Mental Attitude and sustain it. Now you know that the key to all that is good dwells within your own mind, do not hesitate: say yes to martial arts!
