For popular culture, the typical victim of domestic violence is always a woman or a teen girl, most commonly someone who belongs to the lower economic strata of the society. However, the year that has gone by gives us some concrete data which shows that such stereotypical views on domestic violence might not always hold.  Domestic violence is so rampant an issue that the number of its victims has crossed the 12 million mark this year, and this number includes both men and women from all strata of the society. This means that one out of every four women and every seven men you meet out there might be hiding the wounds of domestic violence.

The Dilemma of a Society: The Ugly Facts of Domestic Violence

Following are some of the facts which will help us to see domestic violence for what it is, and resist even its subtler forms when we encounter it in our personal circles.

  • Though the term domestic violence points to the home, any form of physical, psychological and sexual violence that happens in the private sphere – within households, from intimate partners or from family members – broadly comes under it.
  • Among its many forms are verbal abuse, threats, insult and humiliation, stalking, cyber revenge, physical violence, psychological assault, sexual coercion, rape and homicide.
  • Domestic violence can result in severe conditions even leading to death, and psychological consequences such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder or suicidal tendency.
  • It impacts not just the victims, but anyone involved in it, including the partner/family member who is perpetuating violence, as well as the ones who witness it, especially the kids.

As its rampancy and impact indicates, we need a safe and effective technique that helps the potential victims to resist domestic violence, and dissuade the potential perpetrators from committing acts of domestic violence. The answer to this lies in martial arts.

The Martial Art Method to Prevent Domestic Violence

Martial arts, if taught in a professional manner, can effectively help in the eradication of domestic violence. The method of martial arts as it is practiced in Bruce McCorry’s Academy (Peabody, MA) is a good instance of how this can be accomplished. As conceptualized at Bruce McCorry’s, martial art lessons, with their physical, mental and emotional benefits, help to beat domestic violence in the following ways:

  • It helps the victims to resist domestic violence by building their physical strength, by imparting self-defense techniques and by making them confident.
  • It helps the victims to be alert to what happens to them and around them, thus helping them to recognize domestic violence for what it is and stand up against it.
  • It helps those with a tendency toward violence to re-channelize their negative energy and process negative emotions like frustration, anger, despair and hatred.
  • It helps those involved in domestic violence in some or other way to overcome trauma, fear and negative consequences by reducing stress and by building emotional strength.
  • As martial art teaches to respect others, to value life, and to nurture a positive attitude, it helps in reducing the chances of domestic violence and in strengthening human bonds.

Saying no to domestic violence is not a
choice, but a necessity.
Let martial arts help you in it.
