When Tai Chi, the celebrated Asian martial art of today was born four centuries back in China, its creators wouldn’t have dreamed that it would become a legendary art that will adapt itself to coming centuries. However, for the medical practitioners of our own times, Tai Chi is nothing less than a wonder art. It is proven to offer sure solution to a number of physiological dilemmas of our times, some of them terminal illnesses and some others born out of unhealthy living practices. Bruce McCorry’s Academy of Martial Arts (Peabody, MA) is where you must go in order to experience the dual benefits of Tai Chi - its body and mind healing miracles – that too in a uniquely combined manner.

Healing Your Body: Tai Chi and Its Miracles in Modern Medicine
Studies on martial arts often talk about how it can help your body - by burning excess fat, boosting cardiovascular health, keeping lifestyle diseases at check, and helping to maintain fitness. However, Tai Chi is one step ahead of all other martial arts in its clinical benefits. A number of studies that tried to explore Tai Chi and its clinical benefits have read it as an alternate healing system, pointing out that it can easily become the base of an alternate therapeutic program. Tai Chi was shown to have enormous benefits for patients suffering from a number of conditions, ranging from Parkinson’s Disease to Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis.

Tai Chi’s clinical benefits were further widely acknowledged with the foundational research on its effects on the treatment of cancer and similar terminal illnesses. MD Anderson Centre at Fudan University noted how Tai Chi can help to combat the accompanying symptoms of terminal diseases such as pain, fatigue, sleeplessness, anxiety and clinical depression. In another monumental study, Linda Carson, of the University of Calgary, noted that Tai Chi learning can bring about changes at the level of cellular structure, and thus it can be a great support system to the clinical treatment of cancer. Together, these make Tai Chi one miracle art that can actually be the health solution of our times.

Bullying is a social menace that receives much public attention and action these days. However, we have to acknowledge that the awareness programs and help initiatives haven’t really succeeded in erasing bullying altogether from our schools. A casual look at the recent statistics by National Center for Education Statistics will show this:

  •  20.8% of children report being bullied in school, which means one out of every five children in American schools are victims of bullying.
  •  The range of bullying in US schools can cause psychological, physical and social damage: as the report shows, kids are ridiculed, called names, humiliated, subjected to rumors, physically assaulted, purposefully isolated, and forced to do unwanted tasks.
  •  According to the data up to 2015, boys are more subject to being physically bullied, while girls are more privy to be psychologically bullied.
  •  Tulane University has noted the quite damaging nature of cyberbullying: while only 15% of kids admit being cyberbullied, 70% of kids admit to having witnessed cyberbullying – this discrepancy becomes more revealing, as cyberbullying victims are 2-9 times likelier to think of suicide, and probably not report the incident.

The rather alarming stats indicate how impossible it is for adults to manage the spaces and contexts in which bullying happens. Unsupervised classroom moments and non-monitored sites like cyberspace are the likely contexts of bullying. This points to the heightened importance of self-defense as the viable way to avoid bullying altogether from our school system.

The Martial Art Way: Taking Care of the Bullies Once and for All
Studies have pointed out the possibility of martial arts as an enduring solution for teaching kids to resist bullying. Martial arts, in general, can help the potential victims to be more assertive and defending. It can also prevent potential bullies from acting out the bullying instinct.

The anti-bullying awareness programs and self-defense martial art lessons conducted by Bruce McCorry’s Academy of Martial Arts (Peabody, MA) indicate the potential of martial arts as a possible solution. The experience at the academy shows that:

  •  Martial arts can effectively help kids to be physically stronger, confident, assertive and courageous – all of which are qualities which make them less likely to be bullied. Young martial art learners have been shown to be more likely to protest being bullied, and stand up for others when they witness bullying.
  •  Martial arts can help kids with a penchant for bullying to channelize their energy and dissatisfaction to constructive activities like studies, martial arts and sports. In addition, martial arts teach kids to be respectful, tolerant, kind and open to differences, thus ruling out many root causes that may lead them to bully others.
  •  It is noted that both bullies and victims are equally capable of being psychologically affected by bullying. Martial arts help kids with a history of bullying (either as victims or bullies) to cope with their past, emotionally manage the effect, and emerge out of the damage. It is the perfect self-help and self-defense available.

Self-defense oriented martial arts lessons at Bruce McCorry’s academy is the example of a successful program that helps children to break out of the damage and stigma of bullying. Choose martial arts as a possible solution to ensure a better school life for your child.
