We tend to expect the holidays to be the healthiest time of the year for us: after all, it is those months of the year when we get to take a break from the stress-filled work routine, meet family and friends, and eat to our hearts’ fill. Unfortunately, studies point out that even though we may be happy and relaxed during holiday months, the same cannot be extended to health. According to many studies, holiday weight gain is not a myth at all – an average American experiences an irreversible weight gain of five to seven pounds during the holiday months of November and December alone.

Holiday Weight Gain: Causes and Consequences
It is not hard to guess why holiday weight gain happens. Irregular diet patterns--in other words, a sudden consumption of high calorie food in a short span during the holiday months, is an important factor. So is a sudden break from your workout routine, if you have been following one.

What makes holiday weight gain so scary is the fact that it is irreversible: you will not find it easy to shed those extra pounds you accumulated during holidays. Particularly, if you have been in a regular diet or fitness routine, your body usually gets accustomed to the low fats and low carbs it regularly gets, and learns to function with what it gets. A sudden intake of carbs and fats in a short span, with no physical action to burn them off, then forces your body to store the extra fat for future, causing irreversible weight gain.

Kickboxing to Fight Holiday Weight Gain
Is there any way to fight the irreversible weight gain during holiday months? Sticking to a diet is not the option, not when you are in for a celebration feast with your family. The other way to check the fats from being stored in your body is to stick to a proper fitness or workout strategy during the holiday months.

This is where a martial art like cardio kickboxing comes to your help. Kickboxing is a popular US martial art that is renowned for its fitness benefits. Kickboxing, especially its powerful variant cardio-kickboxing, is probably the most efficient among martial arts and workouts when it comes to fitness. A regular cardio kickboxing session has a fitness- and training-oriented procedure, staring with a cardio warm up like skipping or jogging, moving on to calisthenic moves in the second phase, regular moves like kicks and punches in the third phase, and a cooling off session at the end. The first helps to boost cardiac health, and the second and third phases help to shed calories at a rapid rate and tone muscles.

Kung Fu, as you might know, is one of the most popularly practiced martial arts in the world. •         It focuses on your inner chi: chi or qi is a Chinese term which means ‘life energy’, that recurs in the philosophies of many Chinese martial arts, most popularly in Tai Chi. What people may not know is that Kung Fu too places great stress on developing one’s inner chi. Even when Kung Fu originated as a self-defense oriented art that helps people in one-on-one combat, in fact Kung Fu manages to do this by teaching you to enrich, nourish and master your inner energy, providing mental, physical and spiritual tranquility to those who learn it.
  •         It has many variants and styles: Kung Fu is a collective term, that refers to many styles and variants together. Some of these are interestingly named after dragon, snake, tiger or crane. What this means to a prospective learner is that Kung Fu offers an amazing choice range and is an extremely adaptable art: you can choose to learn and gain experience in the particular variant that suits your needs.
  •        Kung Fu makes your body agile and flexible: Kung Fu is an art that will make your body move. One interesting benefit of Kung Fu is that its learners develop flexible, agile bodies. It is better to start Kung Fu as a child because as a child, your body will be still agile, which makes the task of Kung Fu easier. Even if you are a late learner, however, you can get an amazingly flexible body through Kung Fu.
  •         It was the favorite are of many celebrity practitioners: Kung Fu is a world-renowned martial art today, partly because it was taken up and popularized by many celebrity practitioners. Bruce Lee’s name is unforgettable when it comes to introducing and popularizing Kung Fu in Hollywood. So are the names of superstars like Jackie Chan and Jet Li. The popular Korean martial art of Taekwondo might be familiar to you as a swift, light martial art renowned for its fascinating kicking strategies involving jumping, spinning, stretching and head-high moves. Taekwondo has its roots in the traditional Korean martial arts like Subak, Taekkyeon and Gwonbeop. However, its modern variant was developed only in the 1940s and 1950s. In less than seventy years, Taekwondo went on to become a loved pursuit of martial art enthusiasts. There are many interesting facts about Taekwondo that makes it an intriguing art for those who love it. Here are some of them:
  •       The word ‘Taekwondo’ literally stands for ‘way of the foot and the hand’. The name is a tribute to the liberal use of hands and fist within the martial art, which is mostly made up of swift light moves, kicks, punches, locks, blocks, throws and strikes. These quick, graceful moves make Taekwondo a powerful art that provides a toned, lean and strong body to those who train in it. It also is a great health-booster.
  •      Taekwondo relies a lot on focus, concentration and presence of mind. Those who train in taekwondo develop a deep sense of the combat philosophy of the art, improve their concentration skills, and become alert, confident individuals. The learners can easily use Taekwondo to gain stress relief and as a self-defense. It is such a potent self-defense that South Korea even uses Taekwondo training as part of their military training.
  •      Taekwondo is one martial art where there is a lot of chance for professional glory and acknowledgement. It is one of the most professionally organized martial arts. Early initiatives by the Korean Taekwondo Association meant that today there are two solid international bodies under which Taekwondo training, combat, ranking and competitions are organized: the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) and the World Taekwondo Federation (now, World Taekwondo). It became the one of the two martial arts to be an Olympic event in 2000. It is also an event in Paralympics. Learners of Taekwondo have great chances of becoming world-renowned practitioners through such organized events.
  •      Taekwondo is an art well-loved by celebrities. Popular film and television artist Chuck Norris holds the position of an 8th Degree Grand Master in the art of Taekwondo. Another inspiring celebrity who has learned Taekwondo throughout life is the iconic country music star, Willie Nelson who came to earn a 5th Degree Black-Belt as he was about to turn 81 years of age! Other celebrities to have tried out Taekwondo are Arnold Schwarzenegger, Barack Obama and Eric Roberts.
