After-school Martial Arts Program

Why After School Programs are Beneficial for Kids
written by: Bruce McCorry's Martial Arts Academy Peabody, MA
Are you a parent who always keeps an eye on what your child is up to? Or are you the kind of parent who wonders where your child went after school, till the time he or she reaches home late for supper? In both cases, it is important that your child should have a safe place to go to in the after-school hours. A shocking study reveals that around fourteen million students cannot afford safe and reliable after-school programs in the US. They spend their after-school hours without having a specific place to go to. According to a survey named America after 3 PM, 15.3 million students expressed their wish to participate in an after-school program, had it been available in their localities. The fact remains that good after school programs are either not available in the locality, or the available ones are too costly.
Dangers Lurking in After-school Hours When your child hasn't got a trustworthy after-school program, you have to think for a moment that what he or she might be doing in the vulnerable hours between 3 to 6 pm. The time after 3 pm is the most notorious for teen crimes and anti-social behavior. According to an alarming survey conducted by NYVPRC, drug intake is forty-nine percent more in children who don't participate in an after-school course. Children who don't attend an after-school program are thirty-seven percent more likely to end up in unhealthy relationships. The time between 2 to 6 PM reports the most incidents of violence against children. From drugs and alcohol to sex rackets, all kinds of evils await children who are forced to spend their after-school hours wandering.
Benefits of After-school Programs All these happen due to the lack of a proper after-school program. Two aspects define an after-school course: firstly, these programs are a safe shelter for children till their parents can come and collect them. Secondly, they provide the child with the opportunity to learn something useful. The main reasons why parents consider after-school programs beneficial over traditional options are these:
  • After-school programs are cost-effective compared to traditional option
  • After-school programs are more convenient
  • As the child gets something new to learn, they enjoy after-school programs over other options.
Apart from these general benefits, there are some more, worth mentioning.
On one hand, after-school courses acts as a supplement to the academic
progress of the kid. On the other hand, they improve the social skills of
the child and make he or she socially active. Some programs like martial
arts can even improve the physical health and well being of the child.

Martial Arts Training Helps Acheive Higher Grades

How Martial Arts Training Helps in Achieving Higher Grades
Written by: Bruce McCorry's Martial Arts Academy Peabody, MA

It is every parent's wish that their children should excel in their
studies. Parents leave no stone unturned when it comes to their children's
education - extra coaching, memory boosters, health foods and drinks - they
try it all. Is there a magic solution that can help your kids in studies
and improve their grades? Martial arts is such a magic bullet that can make
your child shine in studies and get he or she better grades.
How Do Martial Arts Empower Kids Psychologically? There is a fundamental difference between other so called study-aid techniques and martial arts. Some study-aid techniques such as tuition and crash coaching artificially compel your child to study. Some other techniques such as super foods and memory boosters try to modify your child's abilities from a medicinal point of view. Martial arts are the only solution that takes up a psychological approach. While other study-aids assist learning process artificially, martial arts focus on developing those natural abilities which further help in studies. These natural abilities include concentration, memory power, grasping power, quick thinking, critical thinking, association and logical reasoning. Quality martial arts training at renowned institutions like Bruce McCorry's can actually bring about a miraculous change in your child.

Martial Arts and Coping with Setbacks

Martial arts helps a child to overcome any setback he or she may face as
a part of learning process. Children, by nature, find it difficult to
accept failure. Martial arts teach them the sportsman spirit needed to
consider failure as a stepping stone to success. These art forms equip
children with enough self-confidence and self-esteem so that they can face
any difficulties in learning without flinching. Taekwondo, Judo and Tai Chi
teach kids the basics of perseverance, dedication and working hard. Martial
arts helps kids to remain detached from the negative elements in classroom
such as bullying, peer-pressure and teasing. All these help kids to focus
more on studies.

Cooperation and Martial Arts

Another aspect of martial arts training is that they help children to
become better teammates. As martial arts practitioners, they learn
teamwork, cooperation, mutual respect, mutual acceptance, tolerance and
acceptable social behavior. This helps them when it comes to combined
activities such as group study and team projects. They develop sharing and
helping mentality which assist them in group activities. Martial arts also
give the students physical energy so that they can work for longer hours
without exhausting themselves.

Teens Overcoming Peer Pressure through Martial Arts

Teens Overcoming Peer Pressure through Martial Arts
written by: Bruce McCorry's Martial Arts Academy Peabody, Ma

Being a teenager is not easy any more as it used to be. Studies have shown that today's teenagers have a difficult time coping with the challenges in their school lives. Peer pressure is among the forefront of villains. Today's teens are more conscious of what their friends think of them, and they are more eager to maintain a self image that does not make them stand out. Many children become willing to check out drugs, alcohol and smoking just to impress their friends. The following statistics may look alarming, but it is fact:

Real Beauty Campaign by Dove found out that 90% of the girls are dissatisfied about at least one aspect of their appearance and would love to change it. • According to American Lung Association, around 3900 teenagers are initiated to cigarette every single day in USA. • Though alcohol is prohibited among children below 21 years, 11% of the total alcohol consumption of US is by teens between 12-20 years. • One third of US teenagers have been offered drugs in their school at least once. • According to the National Household Survey on Drug Use and Health from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 74.3% of high school students have tried alcohol. • 3.1 million teenagers smoke, according to the American Lung Association. • The Kaiser Foundation reports that about 50% of teenagers feel pressured with regard to sex in relationship
Can martial arts be a savior when it comes to overcoming peer pressure? Will it help teens to resist bad habits induced by their friends? The answer is yes. Handling Peer-Pressure through Martial Arts Martial arts are often projected as an aid for handling peer pressure. This works in four ways. On one hand, martial arts help teenagers to be self-confident and sure of themselves. They don't feel the urge to jump in the bandwagon and ape whatever their friends do. Secondly, martial arts makes them physically fit and mentally satisfied so that they become contented about their own appearance and thoughts. This works against the 'urge to change' and helps teens to fit in more easily. Thirdly, martial arts help teenagers to recover from the habits they have picked up as a result of peer pressure. This includes alcohol, drugs, smoking, addiction to pornography, eating disorders and much more. Finally, martial arts can be used as a good self-defense option when you are physically forced to do something unpleasant. How Does Bruce McCorry's Help You to Overpower Peer Pressure? Over the past four decades, Bruce McCorry's Center has taught the lessons of martial arts to the children of Peabody, Massachusetts and the entire North Shore. The training at Bruce McCorry's has helped them to handle peer pressure and overcome various challenges that emerge in their adolescent years.
Tai Chi and Kung Fu at Bruce McCorry's helps you to keep a calm attitude toward life. After practicing, you stop worrying about unnecessary complexes such as being thin, impressing others, trying to fit in and so on. You learn to accept your individuality and live with it. Sports like Kickboxing and Taekwondo at Bruce McCorry's help you to defend yourself if anybody forces you to try out something through peer pressure. You become physically fit and start bothering less about the way you look. What others think of you becomes less important. Martial Arts help you to develop self esteem. You realize that you have an identity beyond what your friends think of you. You realize your own potential and start recognizing it. At Bruce McCorry's you study the philosophy underlying various martial arts. This helps you to develop a balanced view towards life as a whole. You become mature in your thoughts.

Prevent Bullying through Martial Arts

How Martial Arts Help to Prevent Bullying in Schools and Camps
written by: Bruce McCorry's Martial Arts Academy
Every parent wants their kids to have the best. No one wishes to hear that their kid is either bullied by others in the class, or that their kid has turned into a bully. Bullying is a menace that has crept into our classrooms and summer camps and it should be rooted out in the very beginning. Bullying does harm to both the bullied and the bully. The victim often suffers from mental depression, constant feeling of insecurity, persisting fears, nightmares, inability to concentrate on day to day activities, a pessimistic attitude and in some cases, suicide. On the contrary, bullies turn to antisocial activities of a higher grade such as hazing and sadism, which ruin their lives. In either way, bullying is a danger that should be prevented. Can Martial Arts Prevent Bullying? Nowadays, the significance of martial arts like Judo, Karate and Kung Fu are getting recognized around the world. Scientists who do research on the multiple benefits of martial arts often point out that martial art is a panacea that can contain classroom bullying. When we think of martial arts in this way, naturally we see it being used by the victims defense mechanism. On the flip side, even the antisocial kids benefit from martial arts. Thus martial arts not only provides an immediate solution by coming to the aid of the bullied, but it also acts as a permanent solution by gradually changing the mindset of the bullies.
How Martial Arts Help the Bullied? Naturally, a child becomes the usual target of a bully because he or she is the most timid and the most different of all. Being non-assertive and different from others makes kids easy targets of bullies. These bullied children need something that will foster self-confidence, self-worth and assertiveness in them. Martial arts does exactly this. Sometimes, behaving in a non-disciplined way may causes a bully to target a child. Martial Arts helps the bullied kid to remain cool and always disciplined, even in the face of provocation. Martial Arts teach children that others will respect them only if they have some amount of self-respect. It also helps the victims to foresee what provokes the bullies, and helps them to avoid such behavior. Martial Arts makes the children realize their true potential and make them feel that they can be leaders in their own right if they want. It also helps to burn off the stress and depression caused by bullying. Above all, the very fact that the targeted child knows a martial art makes him/her respected in the eyes of bullies. They think twice before tormenting the child.
How Martial Arts Help Bullies? Bullies usually like having command over others. They get others to fear and respect them. Usually they want themselves to be the center of attention. But Martial Arts makes them appreciate and respect others so that they no longer feel the need of having to dominate over others. Martial Arts helps the bullies distinguish between what is right and what is wrong. It teaches them mutual respect and makes them more disciplined. Martial Arts helps the bullies to master control over their own negative emotions such as anger, contempt, hatred and jealousy. Above all, Martial Arts diverts the attention of the bullies to something useful; it gives them an outlet to channel their excess energy. Prevent Bullying through Martial Arts at Bruce McCorry's Martial Arts training at Bruce McCorry's Academy (Peabody, Massachusetts) has led many children through the golden path of recovery and success. MMA Peabody Ma - Mixed Martial Arts Bruce McCorry's Martial Arts,

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Training at Bruce McCorry's Martial Arts
written by:  Bruce McCorry's Martial Arts, Peabody, MA

Mixed Martial Arts: A History

Mixed Martial Arts, popularly known as MMA, is a renowned full contact
martial art form that combines a number of fighting techniques from
different art forms. The tradition of mixing various fighting sports can be
seen from the early Athenian Olympics itself. In the early 20th century,
this blending trend reemerged, especially in Japan, Pacific areas and the
continent of Europe. This manifested in a new martial art form called Vale
Tudo that materialized in Brazil for the first time. From Brazil, the art
form reached USA toward the end of twentieth century. It took the form of
MMA, and went on to be popular all over the world.
1993 was a crucial year in the history of MMA. The Ultimate Fighting
Championship (UFC) was established in this very year, with the aim of
promoting MMA. It became the largest and the best MMA institution in both
United States and the world. The UFC framed and enforced the Unified Rules
and judging principles that have to be kept while conducting MMA combats.
Rick Blume, the chief of Battlecade invented the name Mixed Martial Art in
1995. At present, MMA is a well-enjoyed popular sport all over the world,
thanks to a number of dedicated organizations such as the UFC, the World
Extreme Cagefighting, Bellator Fighting Champaionships,  PrideFC, and the Strikeforce to name a few.

Styles and Techniques in MMA

The three variants of MMA include Stand Up style, Clinch style and Ground
fighting style. Stand Up style combines art forms like Karate, Muay Thai
and different boxing and kickboxing systems. Clinch focuses on wrestling.
Freestyle Wrestling and Greco-Roman variant are combined with other art
forms like Judo in this. The ground moves mainly consist of the moves
adopted from Jiu-Jitsu of Brazil (which was the fundamental form of MMA)
along with Judo and Sambo. Competitions in MMA are mainly cage fighting and
ring fighting, involving various kicks, punches, holding techniques and a
variety of moves.

MMA instruction and Bruce McCorry's Academy

Traditionally, MMA training was confined to those who aspired to become
professional competitors. Nowadays, with the discovery of both physical and
mental benefits of MMA, this has developed to a mainstream genre to which
students flock enthusiastically. Nowadays MMA is taught to everyone right
from children to adults, in varying degrees of intensities. It has gained
popularity as a well-organized martial art, a beneficial health boosting
mechanism and a handy defense technique.

Bruce McCorry's Martial Art Center (Peabody, Massachusetts) carries an
excellent MMA program, for both children and adults alike. Since the
prospect of cage fighting involves danger, especially in the case of
children, Bruce McCorry's follows a special program that avoids all type of
cage fighting and ring fighting. The academy focuses on the aspect of
improving the physical and mental skills of its students and making them
adept in the art, rather than encouraging them for open combats. Especially
