Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Training at Bruce McCorry's Martial Arts
Written by: Bruce McCorry's Martial Arts Academy

An overview of the history of Mixed Martial Arts
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is one of the most popular forms of fighting sports today. It's popularity is largely attributed to the blending of different martial arts forms when participating in full contact combat competitions. Early forms of mixed fighting competitions can be traced to the Athenian Olympics. The early 20th century saw re-emergence of mixed fighting in European and Pacific countries as well as Japan. One of the modern forms of MMA is the Vale Tudo which emerged in Brazil. USA quickly adopted MMA in the late 20th century and is largely credited for the sport's success across the globe.

1993 is the year the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was established. For the past 22 years, the UFC has been the most successful and recognized MMA institution. It's also credited for creating the Unified Rules and judging criteria used in today's MMA competitions. The term MMA was coined by the Chief of Battlecade, Rick Blume in 1995. Some of the organizations that are credited for getting MMA to where it is today include the
UFC, Strikeforce, PrideFC and, World Extreme Cagefighting.
The three styles of MMA
MMA has three main styles of combat. The first is the stand up style which incorporates martial arts forms such as Muay Thai and Karate. The second is the clinch style incorporates wrestling variants including freestyle wrestling and Greco-Roman wrestling. It also includes unique combat forms like Judo. Finally, there is the ground style that incorporates combat techniques borrowed from martial arts like Judo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Sambo. MMA competitions are held inside a cage or ring. Combatants earn points by striking their opponent through kicks, punches and holding techniques which force submissions.

Bruce McCorry's Martial Arts Academy and MMA training
Previously, MMA training was reserved for the few people who wanted to pursue a career in competitive martial arts. Today, many people undergo MMA training simply for the physical and mental benefits it provides. MMA can be taught to people of different ages. The training programs available vary in terms of intensity and detail. The main reasons why MMA training has become so popular include its ability to promote physical and mental health as well as its effectiveness as a form of self defense.

At Bruce McCorry's Martial Arts Academy in Peabody, Massachusetts we provide a well designed and professional MMA program that works well for all age groups. Although MMA is closely associated with cage and ring fighting, our program focuses on safety first especially for children training. We don't encourage open combat situations in the cage or ring. Our program focuses primarily on helping students build on their physical and mental capabilities in this martial arts form. We always observe strict safety measures when training special studemts such as children to avoid risk of injury.

Helping Children Overcome Fear and Anxiety with Karate

Helping Children Overcome Fear and Anxiety with Karate
Written by: Bruce McCorry's Martial Arts

Adults usually associate childhood with having fun, little worries in the world and just letting childhood pass by. In today's world, the contrary is the case. Children today have to deal with a life that's full of anxiety and worry. Much of this can be attributed to the hectic lifestyles we live in as well as living in a society where danger lurks almost everywhere. Now the question arises, is there a way of reversing or completely eliminating fear and anxiety in today's young generation?

What's causing fear and anxiety in today's kids?
Any parent asking their child what is likely to cause them fear and anxiety is likely to get an endless list of reasons. Some of the common causes of fear and anxiety in todays young generation include the following:

-Endless criticism: Children are overly sensitive about what those close to them think about them. Anticipation of harsh criticism from a parent, teacher or even a peer can result in intense anxiety and fear. This can result in low self esteem and too much worry about any future reprimand or form of negative criticism.

-Societal dangers: Today's child is more exposed to societal dangers than before. These dangers come in different forms including bullying, hazing and even sexual assault. Many parents are usually oblivious to these dangers.

-Pressure to achieve: Children are under pressure to achieve a lot within a limited time period. This results in stress. Some of the pressure to achieve comes in the form of school assignments, presentations and examinations. Anxiety is usually experienced two ways. First, the child is worried whether they will complete the task in time. Second, the child worries whether the completed task will be appreciated or not.

-Peer pressure: The desire to make friends can lead a child into indulging in unhealthy activities which are forced upon them by their peers. The source of worry is when a child keeps anticipating whether they have to indulge in such activities to retain their friends.

Eliminate fear and anxiety through karate
Many people are taking martial art classes as a way of relieving stress and building self confidence. Karate is one of the martial art forms that's known to help kids beat anxiety and stress. Some of the ways this martial art does this include the following:

The knowledge that a child can defend himself or herself from bullies or perverts goes a long way in building their self confidence. Children who believe in themselves as capable of self defense often face life situations calmly.

The act of training karate draws the mind's focus away from life's stresses to focus on the training session. This helps to alleviate stressors in the child.

Karate training teaches life values like self respect and tolerance. A child is able to look at life through a positive outlook. They learn to appreciate the fact that criticism is part of life and, it doesn't necessarily mean that their actions are worthless.

Karate helps to build the child's personality. The self confidence built during training helps the child learn to make the right choices. The child will be able to make their own decisions without being pushed by peers to do so.

KICK the Winter Blues with Martial Arts

How Martial Arts Can Help to KICK the Winter Blues
Written by: Bruce McCorry's Martial Arts Academy

Winter can be a very depressing time of year. It's cold, the daylight hours are short and lately, the snow accumulation has made record highs. It can be very easy to lose motivation and find yourself stuck in a rut where you do nothing except go to school or work and come home again. It doesn't have to be like that! Martial arts can help put some purpose and fun back into your life. Although a record number of people are beginning martial art classes every year, a lot of new faces vanish before their first hundred days is up. Don't be that person. Be the one that goes the distance and develops a lifelong passion for martial arts! So how can you make sure that you become the student who stays the course?

Understanding how motivation works.
There are two kinds of motivation. Intrinsic, and extrinsic. Extrinsic motivation is when an outside force motivates you to do something. For example, when it comes to homework time, many children require extrinsic motivation from their parents to stay on task. The other kind is intrinsic motivation. This is when the motivating force is internal. When you really love something and have a strong desire to do it, that is intrinsic motivation.

So, how do we apply this to martial arts?
Everybody knows that there are huge positive benefits to be gained from studying martial arts. So why do so many people fail to last more than one hundred days as a student? Many students are afraid of failure. Some, perhaps, are just lazy. Some have too many other commitments in their lives already. For others, maybe martial arts is just not for them.

In martial arts, it is important to achieve a healthy balance of extrinsic and intrinsic motivational factors. If you are only attending class because you are being forced to, or, because you are trying to impress somebody, then you will never last. Likewise, if you enjoy the classes massively, but never see any payoff from them outside of class, then you will likely begin to wonder whether martial arts is really right for you. So it is important to decide from the outset what you want to gain from your martial arts program and then find the course that is best suited to that goal.

One way to keep interested is by setting a goal. When setting goals, you should adhere to the SMART goal model. Smart is an acronym that stands for

Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Realistic
Time-specific

So a goal along the lines of "I want to be pretty good at kicking", while admirable, is not a SMART goal. It is not specific, it is hard to measure and it lacks a time period. Also, it uses "I want to", which is weak language. A better goal would be something like "I will become proficient at five new kicks by next month". That's a winners goal!

Find a martial arts center that you enjoy!
People are very emotional creatures. If you don't like the center, the teachers, or the other students, then you won't want to keep coming back day after day. You'll start to make excuses not to continue and you might not even realize that you are doing it. Enjoyment and the right atmosphere will keep you motivated for years and years.

Martial Arts for Fitness

Martial Arts for Fitness: The Perfect Solution
Written by: Bruce McCorry's Martial Arts
Countless individuals have been trying to keep their bodies fit and lean for a good part of their lives without any success. Most of these people genuinely want to keep fit but their goals seem evasive. But, why do most people who try to gain a lean and fit body fail? One of the main reasons is that they often choose a fitness regime that's designed to fail from the onset.

 Where these fitness regimes fail
Dieting is often seen as an easy way of losing extra body fat and keeping lean. A good diet plan can aid in healthy weight loss through the exclusion of extra calories in food and emphasis on eating healthy. Dieting however won't give you the lean body you want. In addition, most diets available today aren't well researched meaning they don't provide much value as far as weight loss is concerned. Another popular weight loss method that's quite popular is the use of supplements. These pose many health risks including messing with the body's hormonal balance.

The perfect fitness solution in martial arts
Working out, coupled with the proper nutrition has been and will always be the best way of keeping fit and shedding unwanted fat. The problem is that many people don't find working out that exciting. That's the reason why many will not achieve their fitness goals. If traditional gym working out doesn't sound good for you, martial arts is an equally, if not better method to keep a lean and fit body. Some of the reasons why martial arts makes the perfect answer to your fitness problems include the following.

- The challenging nature of martial arts allows the body to burn fat and calories fast and easily.

- The different martial art moves allow the body to burn more calories faster than regular gym workouts.

- Compared to traditional exercising, martial arts demands less physical effort on your part but are more effective in creating a lean body.

- Martial arts are an all rounded fitness method in that they not only help you get a body that looks toned but, also helps the body develop in terms of health and strength.

- Anyone can practice and perfect martial arts regardless of age, gender or physical ability.

- There is the fun but challenging factor in martial arts. You'll always look forward to the next martial arts class unlike most gym memberships who often dread their next visit to the gym.

Simply put, martial arts go a step further compared to hitting a gym facility. Besides allowing you to get a lean and fit body, martial arts enables you to build body strength, boost self confidence and, promote health. Martial arts are also great for self defense.

Self-Defense Classes for Women

Self-Defense Classes for Women
Written by: Bruce McCorry's Martial Arts

Despite the multitude of laws that claim to protect women from harassment and abuse, the actuality is that women are safe nowhere in the world. Since 1970s, there has been much organization and mobilization among women against abuse and violence, but the stats of harassment and violence against have shown a steady increase. This ranges from cat-calling and stalking to rape and homicide. According to Jane Doe Inc., one of the foremost pro-women organizations in Massachusetts, the year 2011 – 12 witnessed 2,337 instances of sexual violence in Massachusetts alone.

The stats point to an inevitable reality of our times. Women safety will remain a myth until the ideas of women empowerment translate into actual and practical methods of defense. The most important, of course, is self-defense.
Self-Defense for Women: The Practical Method of Martial Arts
Self-defense has been boosted and promoted by feminist movements and women self-help organizations for decades. One of the practical, legal and extremely useful method of self-defense is martial arts. What role can martial arts play in self-defense for women?

* There are many martial arts that teach moves which can be effectively used for self-protection. The most beneficial are Taekwondo, Jiu Jitsu and Kung Fu.

* Martial arts can increase your physical strength phenomenally. One of the reasons why so many women are victims of abuse is that they are physically powerless to resist assault. This is one point where martial arts comes to your help.

* Martial arts are also a good confidence booster. Often, women falter to resist cat-calling, stalking and other usual forms of abuse just because they don’t feel confident enough. Martial arts can teach you to believe in yourself.

* Martial arts sharpens physical reflexes and quick reaction. Both of these are extremely useful when you come face to face with danger.

* Martial arts is also a practical and possible method of self-defense. Even though protective methods like pepper spray and Tasers are available, many women hesitate to make use of these even though they are legal. Compared to these, martial arts is a defense on which you can actually rely at a moment of emergency.

* Martial arts can teach you not to lose your calmness even at the face of a crisis. This composure is something which a woman will find useful if someone tries to abuse her.

True women empowerment will not happen just by mobilizing and organizing women’s forums and societies. It will be a reality only when each and every woman in the society becomes capable of protecting herself from anti-social elements. Martial arts is not just about reacting to a single moment of crisis. It is also about instilling courage, confidence and self-belief in women so that they can use their potential to their full extent and enjoy their equal rights and status. In a way, self-defense martial arts is also about ensuring the dignity and self-worth of women.

Martial Arts - Proven to Create Great Kids

Martial Arts - Proven to Create Great Kids
Written by: Bruce McCorry's Martial Arts

Only those who spend their childhood as great kids can grow into successful human beings later in life. Defining a great kid is simple – which parent doesn't want his/her children to do well in studies, be successful in sports, develop good manners, and grow up happy? If you can ensure all these for your kid in their childhood, chances are that he/she will grow into leading a successful and happy life in the future. As parents, what helps you to contribute to the betterment of your child? At least since psychology started talking about the role of parenting in the character development of a child, parents have thought of the same thing.

Martial Arts for Great Kids
Many studies, surveys and research work done since the 2000s have pointed to martial arts as a potential factor that can contribute to the holistic development of your child. Here are some of the benefits of martial arts for children:

 * Better Students: Martial arts like Kung Fu and Tai Chi can help your child to excel in studies. This is a multifaceted process. By improving health and providing energy, martial arts ensures that kids take less sick leaves, remain focused during lessons, and don’t get exhausted by the end of the day. Martial arts also boosts memory and mental calculation skills. This helps the child to comprehend math, physics and similar subjects better. Martial arts are also a good stress-buster that can help kids to focus peacefully on studies.

* Better Athletes: Martial arts are not just for studies. The way in which martial arts strengthen your child’s body can make him/her a better athlete or sportsperson. Practicing martial arts regularly will naturally enhance physical skills that are useful in sports and athletics. It is useful even in other physically-oriented extracurricular activities such as gymnastics, dancing and aerobics.

* Better Manners: Martial arts have a role in shaping the manners and behavior of your child. It is natural for a martial art learner to imbibe the courteousness and manners that are part of the tradition of these arts. Martial arts enhance social and communicative skills.
