Over the years, humanity has come to rely on technology for everything from knowledge and work to leisure and stress-relief. From devices like cell phones, tablets and computers to the spaces they built like the web and the social media, technology came with the promise of helping us lead a better life. However, the more we look at data, this seems more and more like an unfulfilled promise.
Technology and What it Did to Us
It cannot be contested that technology has indeed revolutionized our access to information and entertainment; that it made work easier and connections possible like never before. Having said this, it also needs to be stated that technology hasn’t put everything right for humanity. Technology has also put us—the individual consumers of gadgets—in a disadvantage in three major ways:
- Health: The common health conditions caused by technology such as posture-related health issues, vision and hearing impairment, and overexposure to radiation are well discussed. To the further alarm of any consumer, it was realized that technology addiction may cause the brain to shrink as much as 20% in time, which is lethal. Technology addiction is as real and unhealthy as any other addictions, causing similar withdrawal symptoms and severe psychological consequences.
- Fitness: Perhaps the most realistically apocalyptic movies are those which portray future humans as dependent beings addicted to technology. While technology did make work easier, it nearly closed off the possibilities of activity, leading us to a fitness crisis like never before. Today, not just inactivity, but even screen media exposure is held responsible for the increasing obesity and fitness problems (National Institute of Health).
- Mental Well-Being: Technology is supposed to make us feel better, but the data proves that it adds to our stress and unease. Surveys tell us that a 94% of us feel unwell if we can’t find the phone, the response ranging from panic to feeling sick. 48% feel compelled to check the phone in bed, 44% cannot sleep without the phone, and 11-49% feel disturbed by notifications while eating or working. Internet in is found to increase anxiety and stress through the social pressure it puts on individuals, and through the act of blasting us with information 24X7.
Unplug, Unwind and Focus with Martial Arts
Why unplug is no more a question, but how to do it is most certainly one. Martial arts is the sole efficient solution that will help you unplug from technology and unwind from the physical and emotional tension that it creates. Martial arts training keeps you healthier and fitter by keeping your body functions in balance and lifestyle diseases in check, by boosting immunity and by reducing health risks. It offers a near-permanent and near-perfect solution to obesity and lack of fitness by providing you a regular and healthy measure of physical activity. It also takes care of mental well-being by eradicating stress, making us emotionally balanced, and helping us to be in tune with our selves. It helps us not just to unplug from unhealthy choices, but actually shift the focus to those very aspects of life which technology usually ruins. It helps us to prioritize health, fitness, profession, family or personality, and balance it with a healthy dose of leisure and entertainment.
To experience the magic of martial arts and to help professional trainers guide you out of your technology addiction, come to Bruce McCorry’s Academy (Peabody, MA)—the hub of martial arts where you can learn to focus on what matters through martial art training.
