Helping Children Overcome Fear and Anxiety with Karate
written by: Master McCorry

Adults think of childhood as a happy phase with no worries and all joy. In fact, studies show that today's’ kids experience much more stress, anxiety and fear than the earlier generation kids used to experience. Anxiety and fear in kids has become a common problem, mainly due to the burdening lifestyle and dangerous society. How can we cope with this problem? Is there a permanent solution to fear and anxiety in kids?

Why are the Kids Worried – The Causes of Anxiety and Fear in Kids Ask your kid what causes fear and anxiety in his/her life – you are sure to get a long list. Kids today have more than enough reasons to be worried. Here are some of them: · Criticism from the society: This counts among the foremost reasons. Criticism includes the fear of getting reprimanded by parents, the fear of being criticized by teachers and so on. It makes kids undervalue themselves and worry about possible criticism in the future. · Dangers: Kids nowadays face many more dangers than what parents notice. Bullying from classmates, hazing from seniors, attempts at physical and sexual assault – many kids worry about these dangers.

· Work stress: Today’s kids have an overload of syllabus and less time to cover it. Examinations, assignments, presentations and projects – all cause much anxiety. On one hand is the anxiety of completing the work before the deadlines, on the other hand, there is the worry about whether the work will be appreciated or not.
· Peer pressure: It is natural that kids may be forced by their friends to indulge in unwilling activities. This too causes kids to be nervous and worried.

Karate: The Panacea for Fear and Anxiety The role of martial arts in keeping its learners stress-free is getting recognized all over the world. Among the martial arts, karate is believed to possess the ability to reduce the stress-level and anxiety in kids. Karate works wonders in many ways:
· Karate boosts the self-confidence of the kids. They start feeling confident that they can defend themselves from physical dangers such as bullying and assault. Students who practice Karate face life with calmness. They start believing in themselves.
· Karate is a good stress-buster. Often, it does the job of a meditation. Children stop worrying about trivial things in life, and start facing life practically. · Karate fosters values like mutual respect and tolerance in kids. They realize that criticism is a part of life, and being criticized does not always mean that whatever they did was worthless. · The physical movements practiced as a part of Karate help kids to keep their mind occupied.
· Karate strengthens one’s personality. Kids who learn karate remain sure of their own opinions. They do not find it difficult to say no if they are not willing to do something. This helps them to counter peer-pressure and classroom stress.

Martial Arts for Kids with ADHD, Autism and Dyslexia

How Martial Arts Helps those with ADD/ADHD, Autism and Dyslexia
written by: Master McCorry

Kids are the joy of a society - their laughter, chatter and playfulness bring happiness to a family. One cannot help being alarmed and depressed at the rates by which more and more kids being diagnosed with autism nowadays. The much-dreaded word Autistic Spectrum includes a wide range of conditions like ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome, ADD and Dyslexia. In fact, many autistic children are wonderfully wired – their abilities range from heightened reasoning to eidetic memory. However, being in the spectrum also limits a kid in many ways. With proper care, an autistic kid could be brought back to normal life.
Drugs: a Solution? Recently psychiatrists have started prescribing psychotropic drugs to children diagnosed with ADHD, Autism and Dyslexia. The effectiveness of these drugs is a topic of debate. There is always the concern of side effects. The situation becomes even more complicated when the diagnosed children are preschoolers in most cases. Is there a solution that is better than artificial medication? The answer is yes.

Martial Arts for Kids with ADHD, Autism and Dyslexia
Engaging in martial arts can change the lives of kids in the autistic spectrum. Wisconsin University conducted a study in 2010 which proved that martial arts actually helped selected autistic children to shed their inhibitions.

Martial arts helps to increase the quality of life of autistic
children in many ways:
· Martial arts helps kids with inattention and prolonged hyperactivity to refocus their attention. Parents of hyperactive kids are often afraid of teaching them martial arts. In fact, martial arts do not boost aggressiveness; instead, it helps hyperactive kids to become less aggressive. ·Martial arts teach autistic kids the lessons of mingling and communication – the two aspects that they find difficult. Martial arts foster courtesy, mutual respect and sociability. ·Martial arts helps hyperactive kids to limit their activities, feelings and craving for attention. They become more passive. Martial arts acts as an outlet through which hyperactive kids can dispose their excess energy. Martial arts refines the cognitive process of children and helps them to think clearly, rationally and quickly. Dyslexic kids can overcome their fundamental learning difficulties through martial arts ·Compulsive repetition of stereotypical movements and love for order are symptoms in autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. Such kids repeat their activities. Some of them retrace their steps constantly. Some arrange things in order repeatedly. Washing hands repeatedly is another symptom. Repetitive movements in martial arts quench such compulsions to certain extend and help to reduce repetitive activities. · Autistic kids often take things literally. They sometimes do not comprehend complicated notions, for example, sarcasm. Some kids cannot associate a succession of information quickly. Their brain does not keep up with the quick procession of information. Martial arts helps them to visualize things and overcome such problems to certain extent.

Martial Arts to Prevent Obesity and Diabetes in Kids

Combating Childhood Obesity and Diabetes through Martial Arts
written by: Master McCorry

Obesity and Consequences A study by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that 18% of the American children in 6-11 age group were obese. The modern lifestyle with its fast-food culture and absence of physical activities has made obesity a common word. Almost 70% of the obese kids have at least one risk factor that leads to heart diseases. They develop pre-diabetes, a condition that indicates the possibility of diabetes in future. Joint pain and apnea follow. Psychological effects like poor self-worth and inferiority complex also accompany obesity.

Type-2 Diabetes: The Villainous Friend of Obesity Obesity is referred to as the hallmark of the more dreaded Type-2 diabetes. Type-2 diabetes is a complex disease because it is insulin-resistant. Traditionally, the genetic background was considered as the cause for this disease. Recent increase in the number of affected children indicates that lifestyle has an equally important role. Type-2 diabetes may lead to later complications such as kidney problems, increased blood pressure, cholesterol, acanthosis nigricans and Poly-cystic Ovary Disease. Battling Obesity and Diabetes Prevention of obesity focuses on two aspects: diet and physical activities. The diet should include healthy food such as vegetables, fruits and oatmeal. Fatty and rich diet shall be avoided. Sugary and sweet food is a big no-no, especially the artificial ones like soft drinks. Physical activities such as working out on a daily basis and participating in outdoor activities like sports and games should be encouraged.

Insulin resistance makes Type-2 diabetes a hard nut to crack. Still, the blood sugar level can be kept normal through proper meal planning and exercise. An effective meal plan devised by a dietitian can work wonders with this disease. The key to prevention lies in total abstention from sugar consumption and in a nutrient-rich diet. Outdoor activities and physical exercises add to these. Martial Arts to Prevent Obesity and Diabetes Martial arts combine the advantages of meditation with that of workout. The physical moves in martial arts tone the body by burning excess calories. It helps your kid to remain fit. Body flexibility, lung capacity and stamina increase. Fat gets distributed in the body equally. Obese kids experience considerable weight loss within a few weeks of martial arts.

It is scientifically proven that martial arts like Tai Chi and Taekwondo
can counter Type-2 diabetes. The active working of T-helper cells has a
crucial role in controlling the disease. A study by Taiwanese researchers
for the British Journal of Sports Medicine proved that a 3-month program in
martial arts considerably boosted T-helper cell activity in sixty diabetic
patients. Mixed Martial Arts are also helpful in combating Type-2 diabetes.

My Life with Polymyositis – Sandra LaRosa

My Life with Polymyositis – Sandra LaRosa
Written by: Sandra LaRosa

After a martial arts session in August 2013, one of my students, Michelle came to me and told me, “Sandra, you are so strong!” Now when I think, her words make me wonder what everyone will say if they knew what really happened… Thank You Michelle, for making me tell this story.

April 2008: How it All Started…

From my teenage, I was attracted to martial arts. In my 20s, I started learning it, and by the age of 30, I had become a martial art practitioner and a bodybuilder. I gave up my career in restaurant management to become the director and teacher at a martial arts academy.
When it all started, I was 42, quite healthy for a woman of my age. Suddenly, I started feeling something wrong with my health. I was feeling more tired than usual, and my muscles were becoming stiff. I associated it with normal ageing problems that most post-forty year old women face. Even when the tiredness started hampering my classes, I said to myself again and again that it’s because of my overwork.
Finally, I decided to seek medical help. My doctor tested my blood, and ruled out the possibility of any serious disease. However, my thyroid level showed some difference, and this was pointed out as the possible reason for tiredness. I was given some medicines.
After a few sittings, I made an appointment with an orthopedic who insisted that I should consult a neurologist for an expert opinion. Exhausting blood tests and muscle tests showed that my CPK count was above 8000 (the normal is below 200). A biopsy finally revealed the truth: I had a serious muscle disease, Polymyositis.

The Beginning of a New Journey…

The news destroyed me. All the scans, bone tests, blood tests and constant visits to the doctor made it one of the most difficult times of my life. My greatest support during these tiring times was my best friend and partner, Bruce. Though the journey was tough, he had a great role in making it a success. In the beginning, I was constantly seeking and searching for answers, always frustrated – but finally, I took a decision: to switch off my computer and move on.

It was already December 2008, and things had changed. I found it difficult to walk long distances; I needed the support of the railing while climbing stairs. I couldn't raise my arms above my head and had difficulties in digestion. My CPK count remained above 8500. I was confused and at times, sorry for myself. I was not always positive, though I tried to be. There were some who even wished that I wouldn't recover, but the positive presence of my supportive friends always guided me through.

Getting to Know My Disease…

What exactly causes Polymyositis is still a mystery to doctors. It attacks the immune system by destroying body tissues. It is supposed to cause pain and tiredness. From what I have known, the severity of symptoms differ for different persons.

Striding Through the Tough Times: Medicines and Support…

I had taken a decision: I will not give up anything. I embraced life, both work and play alike, and my stubbornness led my way. My life became a lot like a Rubik’s Cube, trying to juggle the pieces – work, martial art classes, doctor’s appointments, blood test, infusions – into their slots.
Though the side effects of the medicines tried to scare me, in the end, it was not as bad as I expected. My lifestyle choice rested on a trio - diet, workout and medicines. Prednisone, a drug used to treat body inflammation, is what I would call the Miracle Drug. Though the 60mg dose made me look puffy, I didn't really gain weight. My stomach got upset on another drug named Methotrexate, an anti-rheumatic medicine. What really handed me my life back was a drug called Rituxan, though I was allergic to it initially. Also known as Rituximab, it is an immuno-suppressant, used to cure b-cell leukemia and b-cell non-hodgkin lymphona.
I should thank my support team.  The MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) who helped me back to life. The staff gave me their full support, and was there for me whenever I needed anything. Though I was initially treated by a single doctor, I soon had an entire team looking after my health. Dr. Amato, an experienced neurologist from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston took the helm of my treatment. His knowledge and treatment methods assured me that I was in safe hands. Another great doctor was Dr. Beauprea, the rheumatologist from Harvard Vanquard in Peabody MA. Frequent visits to Dr. Beauprea kept me up to date on tests in-between my trips to Boston MA with Dr Amato. Whenever I was sad and confused, Dr. Haley and her nurse Joanne from Harvard Vanquard were there for me as great pillars of support.

Winning the Battle through Martial Arts…

My disease required physiotherapy. However, my doctors opined that my martial arts practice would be a great alternative. In fact, it was martial arts that kept my muscles from getting weakened further. Practicing Kickboxing helped me to remain strong. My balance, speed and coordination improved as a result of Taekwondo sessions. The stretching moves helped me to get rid of stiffness and made by body flexible. The breathing exercises that I practiced as a part of Tai Chi and Qui Gong did the benefit of a meditation. In short, martial arts were what kept me stress-free even during the hours of difficulty.

 Back to Present…

My life goes on as if nothing has happened. I teach martial arts and concentrate on the positive things in life. At times, I hear an inner voice speaking: “the disease can be treated, but not cured”. However, I am resolved to fight. The days when I feel unwell are getting fewer and fewer nowadays, and I’m sure there will be even fewer of them in future.

Preventing Bullying and Cyber-Bullying with After-School Programs

Preventing Bullying and Cyber-Bullying with After-School Programs
written by: Master McCorry

The kids are back to school with hopes of a new beginning. However, the reality of school life is somewhat different nowadays. Perils like bullying and cyber-bullying give sleepless nights to many children and snatch away a happy school life from them. Defining Bullying and Cyber-Bullying According to Massachusetts laws, any repeated expression that causes physical/emotional harm to the victim or creates an unfriendly atmosphere for the victim at school can be termed bullying. Further, the definition states that bullying encroaches on a victim’s rights as a student and hampers his/her educational process. If these attempts take place via an electronic medium, it may be termed cyber-bullying. Assuming victim’s cyber identity, impersonation, spreading rumors and harmful messages - all fall under cyber-bullying.

The After-effects of Bullying Bullying and Cyber-Bullying are damaging to both the bully and the victim. The victim suffers short-term consequences such as losing self-confidence, inhibition, poor performance at school and lack of enthusiasm. In complicated cases, victims develop long-term consequences such as depression and mental disorders. Bullies too face long-term consequences. In later life, they turn to anti-social deeds and usually end up being deviant and isolated from the society.
Preventing Cyber-Bullying and Bullying The Massachusetts government aims at preventing bullying at both school grounds and school-related localities as well as at other places that are not related to school. Measures are to be taken against cyber-bullying as well. Kids shall be provided with age-appropriate awareness on preventing bullying. A plan for preventing bullying should be created in consultation with the school authorities, the local administrators, parents and students. The plan shall include procedures for reporting bullying, procedures through which action shall be taken against bullying, the different disciplinary actions, procedures for protecting victims, and recovery measures like counseling. Parents should be informed of the instances of bullying, and staffs should be empowered to counter bullying.

Can After-School Programs Prevent Bullying? Surveys point out that juvenile crimes mostly occur between 3 to 6 PM. This is also the time during which most instances of bullying are reported. Children who do not have a particular place to go during the after-school hours usually spend this time simply walking through the streets, or in school grounds like the playground, library or gym. Naturally, this increases the chances of bullying.

The benefits of after-school programs are two: on one hand, after-school
courses offer a safe abode for the kids during these dangerous hours. On the other hand, kids get the opportunity to use these hours creatively, by learning a new extracurricular activity. Recent budget cuts have made after-school classes an affordable choice. In short, after-school courses are a better option compared to traditional daycare.

Kung Fu Lessons

Master McCorry's performance at the Shaolin Temple

Kung Fu Lessons by Bruce McCorrys Martial Arts Academy
written by: Bruce McCorry's Martial Arts Academy
Defining Kung Fu Kung Fu is a popular martial art with its roots in China. It is also known as Gong Fu or Wushu. Kung Fu demands an approach that focuses intensely on the duality of mind and body. It aims at molding the inborn abilities in order to equip a person to face the hurdles in life. It is an art that glorifies the belief that dedicated work is always rewarded. This concept is evident from the very term Gong Fu, the Chinese equivalent of Kung Fu. Gong means to work, and Fu means to be rewarded. Traditionally, Kung Fu had a generalized meaning – it referred to the training of a person, not necessarily in martial arts. Over the time, the term achieved a specialized meaning, i.e., 'training in a martial art’. Kung Fu – A Brief History Legends place the origin of Kung Fu at somewhat 4000 years ago. The origin of Kung Fu is associated with Huang Di, an emperor of the quasi-mythical Xia Dynasty who introduced this new martial art to China. Reference to this martial art can be seen in a number of literary and historical works by various dynasties that ruled China from time to time. Some important references are to be found in works like the Annals of Spring and Autumn, The Classic of Rites and The Han History records.

Most of these early references depict Kung Fu as a mere fighting system
with emphasize on the physical aspects. Over the years, it began developing
a philosophical foundation of its own, thereby becoming a proper martial
art. The contributions of Daoist practitioners and Chinese philosophers
were fundamental in the development of this philosophical outlook.

Kung Fu got proper recognition with the evolution of the Shaolin Style
around 720 CE. The Shaolin Temple is a popular Buddhist monastery in China,
where monks used to practice Chinese martial arts from 16th century onward.
Bodhidharma, a South Indian Buddhist monk is said to have a major role in
giving shape to the Shaolin Kung Fu. Once established in China, Kung Fu
started getting noticed by foreigners, especially by those who traveled
frequently to Shaolin. These inspired travelers learned Kung Fu and started
propagating it in their respective homes. Gradually, it gained importance
as an efficient martial art form.

Nowadays, Kung Fu has achieved a universal dimension as it is taught in
countries all over the world. Even today, the Shaolin Monastery has an aura
of a sacrosanct learning place when it comes to learning Kung Fu. Thousands
of interested travelers and tourists visit the place every year. Modern
studies hail Kung Fu as an efficient stress buster and a remedy for health
problems.

Kung Fu at Bruce McCorry’s Academy

McCorry’s focuses on teaching the two dimensions – the practical and the

Kickboxing Peabody MA

Kickboxing - A Magic Remedy that Sculpts Muscles and Blasts Fat
written by: Master McCorry

Which martial art is the best alternative for a workout? This is a frequently asked question – a question dear to all those who want to shift from the heavy burden of a workout to something easier, lighter and effective. Recently, this question has a new answer – Kickboxing. When the American Council of Exercise came up with the finding that a single hour of kickboxing can burn up to 800 calories, it came as a happy surprise to many workout-haters. Kickboxing is an effective and powerful martial art that has all the features of a good workout.

Kickboxing: How the Plan Works Out!
A look at the various kickboxing moves that aid to sculpt your muscles and
shed the extra fat will give you an idea of the incredible power of this
martial art:

1. Jab: A quick lightning punch with both your foot and the respective arm
moving forward is called a jab. These quick punches serve to strengthen the
arm muscles.

2. Cross punch: A cross punch is the reverse of a jab. In a cross punch,
if you are extending your right arm forward, you will be extending your
right foot backward. Cross punch has the same effect on your body as that
of a jab.

3. Hook: A hook is a rotational punch, aimed at the cheek of the opponent.
Hook punches invigorate your shoulder muscles.

4. Uppercut: An uppercut is a type of punch in which both your fists will
be pointing upwards. An uppercut does not go beyond the level of your nose.
Uppercut punches make use of both your hands and hips.

5. Front Kick: A direct kick with your heels is called a front kick. Front
kick is an effective movement by which both your thigh muscles and your hip
get toned.

6. Roundhouse Kick: As the name indicates, in a roundhouse kick, you make
a rotational kick with one leg while using the other like a pivot. This
move is the best for toning abdomen.

7. Side Kick: One of the most powerful movements in kickboxing is the
sidekick. In this, you balance your weight shortly on one leg and then kick
sideways with the other one. The entire force needed for this move is
driven from the glute muscles.

A combo of these seven different movements in an ordered routine can make
you burn calories and shed fat in the shortest time possible.
