written by: Master McCorry
Kids are the joy of a society - their laughter, chatter and playfulness
bring happiness to a family. One cannot help being alarmed and depressed at
the rates by which more and more kids being diagnosed with autism nowadays.
The much-dreaded word Autistic Spectrum includes a wide range of conditions
like ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome, ADD and Dyslexia. In fact, many autistic
children are wonderfully wired – their abilities range from heightened
reasoning to eidetic memory. However, being in the spectrum also limits a
kid in many ways. With proper care, an autistic kid could be brought back
to normal life.
Drugs: a Solution?
Recently psychiatrists have started prescribing psychotropic drugs to
children diagnosed with ADHD, Autism and Dyslexia. The effectiveness of
these drugs is a topic of debate. There is always the concern of side
effects. The situation becomes even more complicated when the diagnosed
children are preschoolers in most cases. Is there a solution that is better
than artificial medication? The answer is yes.
Martial Arts for Kids with ADHD, Autism and Dyslexia
Engaging in martial arts can change the lives of kids in the autistic
spectrum. Wisconsin University conducted a study in 2010 which proved that
martial arts actually helped selected autistic children to shed their
inhibitions.
Martial arts helps to increase the quality of life of autistic
children in many ways:
· Martial arts helps kids with inattention and prolonged hyperactivity to
refocus their attention. Parents of hyperactive kids are often afraid of
teaching them martial arts. In fact, martial arts do not boost
aggressiveness; instead, it helps hyperactive kids to become less
aggressive.
·Martial arts teach autistic kids the lessons of mingling and
communication – the two aspects that they find difficult. Martial arts
foster courtesy, mutual respect and sociability.
·Martial arts helps hyperactive kids to limit their activities, feelings
and craving for attention. They become more passive. Martial arts acts as
an outlet through which hyperactive kids can dispose their excess energy.
Martial arts refines the cognitive process of children and helps them to
think clearly, rationally and quickly. Dyslexic kids can overcome their
fundamental learning difficulties through martial arts
·Compulsive repetition of stereotypical movements and love for order are
symptoms in autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. Such kids repeat their
activities. Some of them retrace their steps constantly. Some arrange
things in order repeatedly. Washing hands repeatedly is another symptom.
Repetitive movements in martial arts quench such compulsions to certain
extend and help to reduce repetitive activities.
· Autistic kids often take things literally. They sometimes do not
comprehend complicated notions, for example, sarcasm. Some kids cannot
associate a succession of information quickly. Their brain does not keep up
with the quick procession of information. Martial arts helps them to
visualize things and overcome such problems to certain extent.
