An overview of the history of Mixed Martial Arts
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is one of the most popular forms of fighting sports today. It's popularity is largely attributed to the blending of different martial arts forms when participating in full contact combat competitions. Early forms of mixed fighting competitions can be traced to the Athenian Olympics. The early 20th century saw re-emergence of mixed fighting in European and Pacific countries as well as Japan. One of the modern forms of MMA is the Vale Tudo which emerged in Brazil. USA quickly adopted MMA in the late 20th century and is largely credited for the sport's success across the globe.

1993 is the year the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was established. For the past 22 years, the UFC has been the most successful and recognized MMA institution. It's also credited for creating the Unified Rules and judging criteria used in today's MMA competitions. The term MMA was coined by the Chief of Battlecade, Rick Blume in 1995. Some of the organizations that are credited for getting MMA to where it is today include the
UFC, Strikeforce, PrideFC and, World Extreme Cagefighting.
The three styles of MMA
MMA has three main styles of combat. The first is the stand up style which incorporates martial arts forms such as Muay Thai and Karate. The second is the clinch style incorporates wrestling variants including freestyle wrestling and Greco-Roman wrestling. It also includes unique combat forms like Judo. Finally, there is the ground style that incorporates combat techniques borrowed from martial arts like Judo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Sambo. MMA competitions are held inside a cage or ring. Combatants earn points by striking their opponent through kicks, punches and holding techniques which force submissions.

Bruce McCorry's Martial Arts Academy and MMA training
Previously, MMA training was reserved for the few people who wanted to pursue a career in competitive martial arts. Today, many people undergo MMA training simply for the physical and mental benefits it provides. MMA can be taught to people of different ages. The training programs available vary in terms of intensity and detail. The main reasons why MMA training has become so popular include its ability to promote physical and mental health as well as its effectiveness as a form of self defense.

At Bruce McCorry's Martial Arts Academy in Peabody, Massachusetts we provide a well designed and professional MMA program that works well for all age groups. Although MMA is closely associated with cage and ring fighting, our program focuses on safety first especially for children training. We don't encourage open combat situations in the cage or ring. Our program focuses primarily on helping students build on their physical and mental capabilities in this martial arts form. We always observe strict safety measures when training special studemts such as children to avoid risk of injury.

Bruce McCory's Martial Arts Center has created an MMA syllabus that ensures that every student taking the program understands all the rules that govern this form of fighting sport. It's also home to experienced and committed training staff who train students according to their needs. We do our best to ensure that our students have a perfect MMA training environment making us the go to Mixed Martial Arts Institution.
