The Meaning of
Christmas
The most wonderful time of the year has arrived. Christmas has
always meant so much to us, with its wintry coziness, and the warmth of
spending time with family and friends. Despite the depth of meaning that
underlies Christmas, it is true that often our holidays have started becoming a
celebration of superficialities. Sometimes, we find ourselves mechanically
exchanging Christmas cards without pausing to add meaningful words to them.
Sometimes we end up losing ourselves on a shopping spree or holiday feast that
leave us not with contentment but with guilt. This year, the perfect way to
celebrate Christmas would be to remember the true meaning of Christmas.
The True Meaning of Christmas
There is so much to the true meaning of Christmas that
parallels any philosophy of life out there.First and foremost, Christmas is the celebration of hope. It
tells us that even though life may seem bleak, even though our goals may look
unattainable, and situations too difficult to handle, at the end of it all,
there is always hope of a better future, a turn in fortune.
Christmas is also a
celebration of joy. The spirit of joy that Christmas stands for, has two faces.
On one hand, Christmas inspires us to find true joy within ourselves – to do
that little extra for ourselves to attain inner contentment and peace. On the
other hand, Christmas speaks to us of the joy of communion. Meeting our loved
ones, spending time with family and friends, exchanging gifts and cards – all
that becomes meaningful only when lightened up by the joy of getting together
and sharing happiness.
In a sense, the birth of Christ is also a metaphor of God’s
mercy on mankind. Therefore, Christmas always stands for mercy and
philanthropy. Finding hope and joy in Christmas becomes all the more meaningful
when you extend a little of that to those who cannot afford to enjoy the
beauties of life – the sick, the poor and the helpless.
